About

Emmeline North is a British multi disciplined artist, her first commissioned works were large scale murals adding vibrancy and colour to the emerging city of Leeds in the late 90’s.

Having combined work with travel to Australia, Africa and much of Asia, in 2013 she set up Studio Papiyon a creative workspace and retail store, located in Redbrick Mill the North’s leading Interior Design store. Later adding the incredibly popular art cafe, ‘Cafe Papiyon’, Hosting creative workshops, pop up events and external street markets growing the business from fledgling start up to successful concession.

Having sold the cafe to focus on her design work Emmeline returned to university to study Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design at Leeds Arts University. Specialising in sustainable design the course enabled her to create work using various waste materials, including textiles metals, plastics and ceramics. Combining her traditional illustration skills with new digital technologies to produce her first range of digitally printed textiles, wallpaper and stationary products exhibited at New Designers Exhibition in June 2019. An explosion of joyful pattern, with products and surfaces made from recycled materials, taking sustainability beyond the beige.

The London based exhibition introduced her work to companies including John Lewis, Amanda Kelly Studio and secure design experiences with companies such as Lego.

Influenced by her nomadic lifestyle, her work blends urban industrial landscapes with the natural environment whether through material application or design. Spanning both 2D and 3D surfaces, graphic lines and geometric shapes next to biomorphic forms and textures.

Passionate about the environment and working with recycled materials, Emmeline’s work has focused on projects that transform public spaces with her signature palette, and design style. Often using waste or scrap materials as a starting point, pushing her creative skills and utilising her experience working with materials to reimagine and repurpose obsolete objects into fresh exciting interventions.

Her work has been featured in The Sunday Times Homes, Real Homes Magazine, The Yorkshire Post and Alex Russell's Fundamentals of Printed Textile Design.

Public Art Clients include Northern Rail, Kirklees Council, York BID, Temple Newsam Park and Selina Hotels.

Examples of her recent murals and art installations can be found in East Leeds, Batley, Dewsbury, Birmingham and York.

For the love of paint……

“Nothing beats the feeling I get from transforming a space with the application of shape and colour

adding a new dimension

….. the magic of creating and recreating

I hope that energy is passed on for other people to absorb and enjoy too through my work’.

E. North
